Triple Play

High-res version
Today I stumbled upon a new kind of baseball card, called Triple Play. I have a tradition when I walk into a Target, & that’s to buy a pack of baseball cards with every purchase. I usually pick up the series that I’m most currently collecting, which is currently the 2012 Topps Archives, but when I saw this pack for 99¢, I couldn’t resist and check it out.
The pack is manufactured by Panini America, which used to be Donruss. What’s interesting about this series is that only the Major League Players Association is affiliated with it. It has no association with Major League Baseball, therefore none of the team names/logos can be displayed. But every player can be featured.
My favorite part of these packs (which include seven cards) is the graphic nature to them. They’re very cartoonish & make the players out to look like superheros. As children, we look up to these players as if they ARE super-human so seeing them in this design is really fun.
In my first pack, I received the following cards:
- 1. Derek Jeter
- 2. Brandon Phillips
- 3. Alex Gordon Sticker Card
- 4. Albert Pujols Puzzle Card
- 5. Jose Bautista Puzzle Card
- 6. Derek Jeter Focus Card (just shows his eyes)
- 7. Eye Black stickers
There probably won’t be a secondary market for these cards. On box-sets, they do have game-worn memorabilia cards, but I’m not sure what the value will ever end up being. I’ve yet to see any full collections online so I’m not sure if any Bryce Harper or Mike Trout memorabilia cards are available.
On the back of every card is some fun trivia & that adds to the level of enjoyment of these cards. This is a perfect collection piece for kids looking to start out as collectors. Superhero looking athletes, fun trivia & awesome stickers make for a fun set.∗
